The Sydney Morning Herald is the largest newspaper in the country
The Sydney Morning Herald remains the countryâs largest masthead with an average 8.4 million monthly readers.
Data from the industryâs newly authorised metric, Roy Morgan, shows the Heraldâs audience is 73 per cent larger than its direct competitor.

The Heraldâs editor, Lisa Davies, said the masthead, which turned 190 this year, was committed to providing information and fearless commentary and analysis to readers.
âThese results show that the Heraldâs brand of journalism is rewarding readers with fearless,
independent news and analysis, especially as NSW goes through one of the toughest periods in
its recent history,â Davies said.
The Sun Herald is read by 463,000 people, an increase of 22 per cent year-on-year. The Heraldâs sister masthead, The Age, led the Melbourne market, with 6 million readers. It is the second-biggest masthead in the country.
The Heraldâs main rival in Sydney, News Corpâs The Daily Telegraph, reported an audience of 4.9 million. In the same period The Australian Financial Review, which is owned by Nine Entertainment Co (the owner of this masthead), had an audience of 3.4 million.
This is the first set of data released under the new industry metric Roy Morgan. It is collated by industry group Premium Content Alliance, whose members include publishers such as Nine Entertainment Co, News Corp and Seven West Media. The Herald previously reported data based on information from Enhanced Media Metrics Australia. The switch was based on providing more clarity to advertisers and publishers.
When consolidating all data from Nineâs publications including The Age, The Herald, WA Today, The Brisbane Times and The Australian Financial Review, the media company had 12.4 million unique readers.
