Two women killed in semi-trailer crash near Horsham

A man has been arrested after two women were killed in a crash involving a semi-trailer in Victoria’s west on Tuesday afternoon.

The semi-trailer crashed into the rear of a car turning into a rest stop about 12.20pm on the Western Highway at Laharum, about 40 kilometres south of Horsham, Victoria Police allege.

The car was allegedly pushed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with another vehicle. The female drivers of both vehicles died at the scene, while a male passenger in one vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics attended the scene and the male passenger was being flown to Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The driver of the truck, who was uninjured in the crash, was arrested. He is assisting police with their inquiries.

The Western Highway was expected to be closed for most of Tuesday as detectives from the major collision investigation unit examined the crash scene.

Tuesday’s fatalities take the 2021 death toll on Victoria’s roads to 161.

Laharum is nearly 300 kilometres west north-west of Melbourne.
